Experiencia negativa: Review of CENTRO DE LENGUAS MODERNAS (CLM), Universidad de Granada. I finished my studies in December 2025 (Group: 0506). I debated for quite some time whether to write this review, but ultimately decided to share my experience so that others can reach a well-informed decision. The first session was conducted by Iranzo Soledad, a seasoned and engaging instructor. There were approximately 20 students in the group, and the overall first impression was favorable. However, by the second class we were reassigned to a different room and introduced to a new teacher — Sarah Hansen. Sarah Hansen openly stated that she accepted the position at CLM because the salary was better. She also acknowledged that she had no background in teaching Spanish and had previously spent several years teaching French. Spanish is not her mother tongue: she was raised in the United States and relocated to Spain after marrying. This accounted for her pronounced (terrible) accent. She frequently dropped word endings and misplaced stress, which is critical in Spanish. From the outset, she posed personal questions regarding students’ family situations. After I mentioned that I have one child and, due to the war in Ukraine, was unable to have more despite having intended to, she repeatedly brought the subject up again (at least four times throughout the course), stressing that she has three children and pointedly asking me once more how many children I have, as though she had forgotten. Comparable abusive conduct was directed at other students. She shouted at a female student from Italy and insisted that she “not speak with an Italian accent,” accompanying this with yelling and striking the table forcefully with her hand. Throughout the course, she made strongly negative personal comments about her former husband and broad disparaging remarks about “machismo” and Spanish men in general. On one occasion, the lesson concluded 30 minutes early because it was her child’s birthday, even though the classes had been fully paid for. In another class, at Sarah’s suggestion, students discussed drawbacks of living in Spain. It became evident that she holds firm socialist views. She challenged students, asserting that their opinions were “incorrect,” maintained that the tax and welfare system functions properly, argued that individuals illegally occupying other people’s property are entirely justified, that citizens should not be permitted to purchase a second apartment even if financially capable, and that the state ought to confiscate “surplus” income so that “everyone is equal.” Her comments resembled communist rhetoric. While debate can serve as productive language practice, approximately 40 minutes were devoted to pressuring and diminishing students who expressed opposing perspectives. Many left the session feeling demoralized. The examination can scarcely be regarded as a thorough evaluation: the materials were distributed just one lesson prior to the test, and the oral component lasted roughly two minutes per student, effectively turning into a brief informal chat. All students received high marks, making it difficult to objectively assess actual progress. In my view, the standard of instruction and the academic organization at CLM give rise to significant concerns. I strongly advise carefully weighing the decision before enrolling yourself or your children there.
